In the Pousada's immediate surroundings, guests can enjoy the most beautiful tours, amongst which a visit to Mateus Palace, which apart from its architectural beauty, offers guests a full programme of international cultural activities. Neatly decorated with matching curtains and bed covers the rooms are a welcoming place to rest. There are simple menus, three course menus and exquisite regional menus up to the most exigent guests. Situated in the original main entrance of the building gives way to the sitting room with a splendorous view.
Between Amarante and Vila Real, in the heart of Serra do Marao, this Pousada first opened in 1942. Although easily accessed through the forested mountains the Pousada still retains the welcoming atmosphere of an isolated retreat. It provides a good central location for exploring the area and the nearby towns of Amarante and Vila Real. Amarante is an ancient town, which has developed at a crossing of the river Tamega. Dominating the town and looking down regally on the river is the convent and church of Sao Goncalo. Vila real 23 kms away is a small prosperous town which produces the famous mateus rose wine. The country home of the count of villa real is open to the public.
