General Info

Built around Gold mine shaft number 14, which was dug in 1887 in the midst of Johannesburg s gold rush, Gold Reef city is a theme park, a living museum of Victorian architecture and lifestyle and home to the Protea Hotel Gold Reef City. The hotel has its own swimming pool with a cascading water feature and adjacent braai area. As the hotel is part of the Gold Reef City complex, guests have access to all of the facilities - gold mine tours, tribal dancing, can-can dancing, horse and carriage rides, fun fair rides, entertainment, shops, bars and restaurants, as well as the casino and Globe Theatre. Conference facilities cater for up to 180 delegates and a chapel is on hand for spontaneous wedding! The Apartheid museum is situated close to the hotel and is a must see for any visitor to Johannesburg. (AHJ 0609) The hotel offers 74 elegantly appointed rooms in classic Victorian decor, all with en-suite bathrooms. Each room has air-con, satellite TV and internet access and room service is available. The reception is made of dark wood and the lobby area is Victorian in design with black and white check marble floor tiles and lots of antique copy wood furniture. The lobby has a large fireplace with seating for guests and has a nice sense of space with its double storey ceiling height. As with the Gold Reef City complex the hotel is a mock Victorian building just 3 storeys tall. The newly refurbished Barney s Restaurant and Bar, seats over 100 guests and offers a delightful choice of traditional South African cuisine
