Close to the heart of Johannesburg and Sandton s business districts, this small, suite-only retreat envelops its guests in warmth and tranquility, whether with its pool and peaceful gardens or through unlocking the wealth of experiences Africa has to offer. A different designer created each of the ten bespoke suites following a brief by proprietor Christoff van Staden to provide natural light and incorporate the lush garden setting. Gill Butler s Edwardian suite combines sand-hued walls and robustly colored leather-embossed furnishings with modern tile and steel. Other suites blur cultures, with military-style canvas and splashes of color typical of the South African landscape. The ethno-African highlights in couturier Andre Croucamp s silk-enhanced suite, the contemporary cool Johannesburg suite by Cecil Lyons and the ethnic turned high-tech approach in the suite designed by the project architects, Zeghers & Associates reflect the color and excitement of the new South Africa. Originally a private dwelling, Ten Bompas has been reimagined as a home away from home in Africa, combining reassuring calm with adventure, sophisitication and a sense of discovery. Each suite was to have a separate lounge and bedroom, a fireplace, guest toilet, steam bath and plenty of natural light, with access to the outdoors via a ground floor patio or a balcony. Each suite is equipped with complimentary bar, high speed internet, satellite television and a compact disc sound system. This formed the basis of Christoff s brief to the designers. Sides Restaurant offers cutting edge cuisine prepared from the freshest ingredients, together with an extensive wine cellar.
