The parador of Hondarribia occupies a solid castle which overlooks the Bidasoa estuary. Founded by the navarese king Sancho Abarca, its current appearance dates from the times of Carlos V. Because the castle is situated on the border, it endured numerous sieges and became seriously deteriorated and hence had to be reconstructed.
