The Harte & Garter is an amalgamation of two 14th century inns: The Garter Inn and The White Harte. In the late 19th Century they were joined together to form The Harte & Garter Hotel, a building in the Jacobethan style, much loved by the Victorians and reflecting the Shakespearean connections. Following its £7.5m redevelopment, every care has been taken to ensure the hotel has retained its historic charm. The interiors are now a remarkable combination of modern and classical design. The bedrooms are all mainly located in recent extensions to the original mansion. They all have bath and shower, television with in-house movies, hair dryer and trouser press. They are a variety of sizes but all are decorated and furnished in a Victorian style. The restaurant is wood panelled and serves a wide selection of traditional English and continental cuisine. The lobby area is medium in size and is panelled in dark woods. There is a large sweeping stair case. (09/05 LP)
